The Discovery of an Outburst and Pulsed X-ray Flux from SMC X-2 from RXTE Observations

چکیده
Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer All Sky Monitor observations of SMC X-2 show that the source experienced an outburst in January to April 2000 reaching a peak luminosity of greater than ∼10 ergs s. RXTE Proportional Counter Array observations during this outburst reveal the presence of pulsations with a 2.37s period. However, optical photometry of the optical counterpart showed the source to be still significantly fainter than it was more than half a year after the outburst in the 1970s when SMC X-2 was discovered. Monitoring and Discovering X-ray Pulsars in the Small Magellanic Cloud
Regular monitoring of the SMC with RXTE has revealed a huge number of X-ray pulsars. Together with discoveries from other satellites at least 45 SMC pulsars are now known. One of these sources, a pulsar with a period of approximately 7.8 seconds, was first detected in early 2002 and since discovery it has been found to be in outburst nine times. The outburst pattern clearly shows a period of 45...

GRO J2058+42, a transient 198 second x-ray pulsar, was discovered by the Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) on the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory (CGRO), during a “giant” outburst in 1995 September-October. The total flux peaked at about 300 mCrab (20-50 keV) as measured by Earth occultation. The pulse period decreased from 198 s to 196 s during the 46-day outburst. The pulse shape ev...
متن کاملXTE J 0111 . 2 - 7317 : a nebula - embedded X - ray binary in the SMC
The observed characteristics of the nebulosity surrounding the SMC High Mass X-ray Binary XTE J0111.2-7317 are examined in the context of three possible nebular types: SNR, bowshock and HII region. Observational evidence is presented which appears to support the interpretation that the nebulosity surrounding XTE J0111.2-7317 is an HII region. The source therefore appears to be a normal SMC Be X...
متن کاملDiscovery of a new Transient X-Ray Pulsar in the Small Magellanic Cloud
Systematic Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) observations of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) have revealed a previously unknown transient X-ray pulsar with a pulse period of 95s. The 95s pulsar, provisionally designated XTE SMC95, was detected in three Proportional Counter Array (PCA) observations during an outburst spanning 4 weeks in March/April 1999. The pulse profile is double peaked reac...
متن کاملDiscovery of Pulsed X-rays from the Smc Transient Rx J0052.1-7319
Coherent 65 mHz pulsations in the X-ray flux of the Small Magellantic Cloud (SMC) transient source RX J0052.1-7319 have been detected by us in an analysis of ROSAT data. We report on the pulsations we detected in ROSAT HRI data and simultaneous detection of these pulses in hard X-rays using BATSE data. The BATSE data show an outburst of the source lasting 60 days. We report on optical observati...
